Food Expo Uzbekistan 2008

light.jpgTashkent, Uzbekistan
Tashkent is the largest city in Central Asia and has a population of approximately two million people, with an additional two million people living in the surrounding regions. Uzbekistan has a total population of approximately 25 million people, a population growth rate of 2.3%, an average population age of 24 years, and is the most populous of all Central Asian republics.

Uzbekistan's economy
Of all Central Asian states, Uzbekistan has Central Asia's largest economy. Uzbekistan is the world's sixth largest cotton producer (approximately 4 million tons), and is the world's second largest exporter of cotton (approximately 1 million tons generating approximately US$1.5 billion). Uzbekistan also produces about 70 tons of gold per year making it the seventh largest producer in the world and it contains the world's fourth largest reserves.
Since 1991, Uzbekistan has more than doubled its domestic oil production to more than 9 million tons which has allowed it to achieve oil self-sufficiency. Uzbekistan has substantial hydrocarbon resources, particularly in natural gas where it is among the world's largest ten producers.

Why exhibit in Uzbekistan?
Uzbekistan, like most of the Republics of the Former Soviet Union, is a country in transition. However, unlike some other republics it has substantial export earnings though the export of cotton and gold. During September 1996 the government of Uzbekistan stopped the free conversion of the currency. This action led to enormous difficulties for Uzbekistan companies looking to import goods. However, effective October 15, 2003 Uzbekistan signed article 8 of the IMF charter guaranteeing free currency convertibility. The key to developing substantial sales into this large and expanding market is to find the right local partner, who is financially strong, politically well connected, and can use their local knowledge to ensure your success.
