Square of Azerbaijan (86,6 thousand square km) makes it the largest Republic of Transcaucasia. Azerbaijan has geographically advantageous location between Western Asia and Eastern Europe. Population of the Republic is about 9 mill. people, among whom 51.6% live in city area and 48.4% are rural population. Average age is 32 years. Azerbaijan is rich in oil and natural gas, gold, alunites, copper ore, molybdenum, marble and other. Such branches of national economy as oil-producing industry and fishery, sea transport and ship repair are tightly bound with Caspian natural recourses. Tourism industry is rapidly growing (1.5 mill. tourists annually). Azerbaijan economy has the one of the highest growth rates in the world: in 2006 GDP grew on 36.6% to $20.4 bill. Economic growth proceed continuously; during 10 years Azerbaijan economy has increased on 13.6% annually.

Baku is a capital, scientific and technical and industrial center of Azerbaijan, the largest Caspian port and the biggest city in the Caucasus. Due to its antiquity, size and population Baku is one of the largest cities in the East. Population of agglomeration, including Baku and Apsheron, is 2 320 thousand people.
