Romania's Economic Potential
Romania joined NATO in March 2003 and is scheduled to become a full member of the European Union in 2007. It has a population of over 22 million people, strong oil and gas industry, a large port on Black Sea and a booming tourist industry. It has a current GDP growth of over 5%, inflation is under 7% and unemployment is estimated at only 8%. The capital city of Bucharest (Little Paris) has a population of over 2 million and is rapidly growing into a modern European city. In the mornings, thousands of new European cars create the traffic jams that clog the streets, and in the evenings hundreds of Italian, French, Greek, & Turkish restaurants compete for customers.
Automotive Parts & Repair Industry in Romania
Strong economic growth over the last four years and increased incomes has dramatically increased automotive sales. In the first quarter of 2005, the Romanian passenger car market in Romania grew by a staggering 74%, making annual sales in 2005 likely to top 175,000 units. This increase followed strong sales growth of about 32% in 2004 and 20% in 2003. The passenger car stock in Romania is estimated at approximately 0.186 cars/person making a total stock of approximately 4.2 million units.
Dacia, owned by Renault, is the market leader, with a market share of approximately 40%. Dacia is followed by the South Korean-owned Daewoo Automobile Romania (DAR) with approximately 20%. The largest foreign importers in 2003 were Renault, taking Renault-Dacia's combined share of the total vehicle market to almost 50%, followed by Skoda at 6%, Volkswagen at 5% and Peugeot at 2%, Ford 2%, Opel 2%, Toyota 2% and Hyundai 1%
A very high percentage of used cars in total automotive sales have created a demand for automotive spare parts, and the Romanian car parts industry has experienced a rapid expansion in recent years. This growth has been fueled in part by the very high average age of the domestic automotive fleet. This high average age of the fleet is expected to continue due to the continuing high level of used imported cars, particularly from Western Europe.
Many large foreign car parts producers from Germany, the UK, the US, Japan, France and Sweden have established production plants in the country. More than two dozen companies from Germany, France, Italy, Japan, the US, the UK and Sweden have invested more than US$600m in production plants in the country. The main reasons for locating or re-locating output facilities in Romania are reduced operation costs, a cheap skilled workforce and geographical location.
Concurrent with the high average age of the domestic automotive fleet, the demand in car repair services is high and growing. This growth is leading to a high demand for automotive workshop, services and tuning equipment. Furthermore, the increasing level of vehicle ownership had led to a significant growth in equipment for petrol and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) filling stations.
